another 5 things I learned from 500 people (speech given on 21.01.2025)
Yesterday evening I had the honor to deliver my second speech on the topic of “5 things I learned from 500 people”. Having done that I now have completed my level 1 from the persuasive leadership pathway that I’m following as a Toastmasters member.
In my first speech I reflected on my personal journey with guiding people. Initially hesitant due to a lack of experience, I overcame my self-doubt and eventually guided 500 people, stepping far beyond my comfort zone. Through this experience, I learned several key lessons: the importance of simply starting without overthinking, accepting that not everyone will like you, the value of always being your best version, the need to maintain healthy empathy, and the delicate balance of knowing when to say no versus when to compromise. I also emphasised that stepping outside one's comfort zone fosters growth, and that trying new things can lead to rewarding and magical outcomes.
Yesterday in my second speech and last one for this level I’d like to tell you a bit more about another five things I learned for other people. So let’s start
6. Feedback – seek it and provide it
Are you ok? Am I ok? Are you ok with me? These are all questions that help to both seek and provide feedback. Don’t underestimate the power of feedback as it helps you connect better with other people.
7. Connect
(at that point of the speech I went to some fellow toastmasters and shake hands) this is what connect means. It’s a powerful tool to get the discussion started and rolling, so use it!
8. Emotions
What do people from many different countries have in common? They value emotional interactions. Nobel Prize winner Professor Daniel Kahneman says that people don't choose between experiences. They choose between the memories of their experiences. A positive customer experience creates a positive memory — and that is invaluable.
9. Tales
What do people from different age and background have in common? They like to be told tales. Even if they are fairy tales. So if you can tell tales, learn and become a story teller. Through stories we can deliver extraordinary messages so use this tool.
10. Repeat and enjoy
Repetition makes mastery. Repeat and enjoy, what you just learned. Thank you!
