10 things you didn’t know about Luxembourg

1. Luxembourg has an unofficial flag with a red lion on it

You’ve probably noticed that the Luxembourgish flag resembles the Dutch flag, except for the different hues of color. One reason people believe Luxembourg has a second flag featuring a red lion is this similarity. The actual reason, however, is that the red lion is the official heraldic animal of Luxembourg. This flag is typically used during sporting events.

2. Luxembourg has the longest-running Christmas market in Europe
Unlike the famous Christmas markets in Germany and France, which usually end by December 28th or 29th, Luxembourg's Christmas market in the Grand Duchy runs until January 1st.

3. Luxembourg has a special fair recognized as UNESCO Heritage
Schueberfouer is the largest fair in the Grand Region, held annually on Glacis Square from August 23rd to September 11th. The fair must last for 20 days and always begin before St. Bartholomew’s Day on August 24th. Founded by John the Blind in 1340, Schueberfouer is now part of UNESCO’s heritage, meaning it must be organized in the same way, at the same time, and in the same location each year.

4. There are 32 castles that can be visited throughout the country
Luxembourg is home to 32 castles, many of which are open to the public. These historical sites are a testament to the country’s rich heritage and offer visitors a glimpse into the past.

5. Luxembourg is said to be a porn hub capital
Luxembourg has gained attention for having one of the highest per capita usage rates of adult content online, earning it the reputation of being the "Porn Hub Capital." This statistic has made the country an unexpected center of online adult entertainment consumption.

6. Luxembourg has been producing its own ketchup for more than 100 years
Luxembourg has a long history of producing its own ketchup, with the iconic brand "Ketchup Bonomelli" being a staple in local households for more than a century.

7. Crémant is a champagne made by only one type of wine
While the know-how to make champagne originated in France, Luxembourg’s Crémant differs by using only one type of grape in its production. This makes it an excellent complement to other fine foods, such as Grand Cru dishes or fine chocolate.

8. Luxembourg has more than one university
The well-known University of Luxembourg has built a strong reputation for high-quality education. In addition to this, several other institutions of higher learning in the country offer excellent academic opportunities.

9. Luxembourg has a national footgolf team
I wasn't aware of this until I had the chance to travel with the Luxembourg national footgolf team after a championship. Footgolf is a relatively lesser-known sport, at least to me, but it is gaining recognition and is a unique part of Luxembourg's sports culture.

10. The largest community in Luxembourg is the Portuguese community
Many Portuguese people came to Luxembourg as migrant workers decades ago, along with others from various European countries. However, the Portuguese community was the group that decided to stay long-term. Over time, they grew to form the largest expatriate group in Luxembourg.
